Waterless urinals are becoming an increasingly popular choice, for hospitality businesses across the country.
While these urinals offer a wide range of key benefits, they do require a slightly different cleaning process, compared to standard urinals. (But don’t worry – with the right product, cleaning is a quick, easy and effortless process).
So, for best practice maintenance, keep reading. Below, we’ve shared a quick and handy guide to waterless urinal maintenance and cleaning.
Why are more businesses using Waterless Urinals?
Businesses across the country have now started using waterless urinals in their facilities. This includes fast food restaurants like McDonalds, and buildings with public or private toilets.
The benefits of waterless urinals come from the fact that they don’t require water to flush.
As a result, they are more environmentally friendly (due to the reduced water consumption), and they can save businesses considerable costs, in terms of their water bills.
However, a common issue with these urinals is that they can easily block and smell. As a result, proper care and maintenance are imperative.
Maintenance Guide for Waterless Urinals
In many ways, waterless urinals look the same as their regular counterparts.
The key difference with waterless urinals, however, is that they don’t contain a flush valve or pipe. This is replaced with a vertical trap positioned on top of the drain space, which is filled with liquid sealant. Urine passes through this area, under the barrier, and into the drainage area.
With this in mind, we recommend implementing the following regular maintenance steps:
- Ensure you always wear gloves and goggles when cleaning the urinal.
- Clean the surfaces of the urinal on a daily basis, ensuring you use a cleaner that’s safe for these public-use facilities.
- Waterless urinals are less prone to the development of bacteria and rust, as there is no water present in the urinal. But, you will need to deodorise the urinal more frequently. Regularly deodorise the unit, with a cleaning solution that’s specifically made for waterless systems.
- Check the drain and vertical trap for blockages, and remove if present (this is designed so that larger objects will be trapped here).
- Regularly descale both the urinal and pipes.
- Do not pour excess water in the system, as this can remove the sealant.
- Refill the sealant on a regular basis (this is usually required around once every 1,500 uses).
- The trap will need to be maintained on a semi-regular basis.
