Otto Bayer first made polyurethane (PU) back in 1937, combining isocyanates and polyols to create a polymer with real advantages over the plastics available at the time. Depending on the exact mixture, that combination can produce anything from a soft, flexible foam to a rigid, tough material — which is why you’ll find PU in:

Its inert, cross-linked structure makes cured PU a robust, long-lasting and stable material — but that same stability makes it incredibly stubborn and resistant to cleaning products once it has cured.
