Task-specific bacteria that break down petroleum hydrocarbons and petroleum based by-products in soil and wastewater, converting contamination into water and CO2.
Surge HCT — Task-Specific Bacteria for Hydrocarbon Remediation
Surge HCT is a task-specific blend of petroleum-degrading bacteria that breaks down hydrocarbon contamination in soil and wastewater, converting it into water and carbon dioxide for fast, effective remediation.
Hydrocarbons rank among the most difficult organic substances to break down. Petroleum refinery wastewater typically contains both petroleum hydrocarbons and non-petroleum organic waste. To tackle this, Surge HCT combines petroleum-degrading and organic-waste-degrading bacterial strains with additional nutrients in one synergistic blend. These microbes use the hydrocarbons as a food source, and as they metabolise them for energy, they ultimately convert the hydrocarbons back into water and carbon dioxide (CO2).
Surge HCT contains a specifically selected blend of task-specific bacterial cultures that work under diverse environmental conditions, providing complete digestion of petroleum and petroleum-based by-products. It comes as a concentrated dry powder — a stable blend of bacterial spores and micronutrients.
We select every strain in Surge HCT for its ability to work under diverse environmental conditions and deliver the most complete digestion of petroleum and its degradation by-products. HCT contains proven petroleum-degrading strains: independent gas chromatograph analysis confirms that these strains metabolise hydrocarbon products such as gasoline, oil, diesel, and BTEX (Benzene, Toluene, Ethylbenzene, and Xylene).
What’s more, adding nutrients such as Bio8’s Motivate further accelerates the process and stimulates other indigenous bacteria already present in the system.
Surge HCT contains naturally occurring class 1 bacteria that work in both aerobic and anaerobic conditions. Because they’re highly mobile, they can sense their food source and move directly towards it.
Surge HCT is currently used very successfully in petroleum-based wastewater applications and numerous soil remediation sites across the UK and Europe, making it an ideal solution whenever you need to remediate hydrocarbon-based contamination.
How to Use in Commercial Soil Bioremediation Projects
For Brownfield bioremediation, we recommend the following procedure:
- Add 1 x 100g of Surge HCT to an empty 1,000L IBC. This dose treats 50m³ (50 tonnes) of contaminated soil.
- Begin filling the IBC with water, and add Motivate at the prescribed rate as you fill, so it mixes thoroughly with the water and bacteria.
- Once full, leave the mixture for a minimum of 30–60 minutes (preferably 4-6 hours for best results) to activate the bacteria.
- Apply the activated mixture to the screened material using a spray method — either manual or an automated conveyor system — or spray it directly onto windrows.
- Place the treated material in large windrows to let the soil compost. Monitor oxygen and heat levels throughout, and turn the windrows whenever heat drops or oxygen levels decrease — this boosts aerobic activity and speeds up the process.
Other Applications
- Reduces the presence of hydrocarbons in the final effluent of wastewater treatment plants
- Treats waste oil in ship bilges and machinery spaces
- Reduces petroleum hydrocarbons to desired levels in oil/water separators
- Works alongside bioremediation programs to reduce hydrocarbons in contaminated soils
- Treats truck and car wash wastewater
Benefits
- Speeds up the bioremediation process with task-specific bacteria
- Works across a wide pH and temperature range
- Limits the impact of oils and grease in open reticulation systems
- Breaks the bonds in hydrocarbon molecules, reducing their impact on the system
- Reduces cleaning, maintenance and waste disposal costs
More Information about Surge Hydrocarbon
- There are several ways to ensure the best performance when using Surge Hydrocarbon bacteria.
- However, a major advantage that our product has is the range of conditions it can operate under. This gives you flexibility, depending on the sites and the seasons/temperatures you are working at.
- Our bacteria are effective between pH 5-10, anything either side of these parameters will slow down the bacterial activity. The ideal operating condition for Surge Hydrocarbons is pH neutral 7.0.
- Capable of working between a temperature range of 7-55C and lower if the bio pile is substituted with other green waste. However, the ideal operating temperature is 20C.
- Carbon/Nitrogen/Phosphorous Ratios – Ideal C.N.P. is 100:7:1 – however 100:4:1 – 100:10:1 is acceptable.
- Surge Hydrocarbon is a dry powder that needs to be re-hydrated before use. For best results we recommend using water and a bio-stimulant such as Motivate.
- Surge will work in cold, or ambient temperature water, but for best results we recommend the water temperature being between 20-30C.
Always use with Motivate Biostimulant for the quickest results
