About EN720 Polyurethane Flushing Agent

For many years, manufacturers have used Methylene Chloride as a polyurethane (PU) flushing agent. It has a tried, tested and proven track record, but it’s also very dangerous, so responsible companies are now looking for alternatives. EN720 is a non-hazardous, solvent-free polyurethane flushing compound that clears uncured polyurethane residue from machines without using dangerous solvents.

EN720 was developed to fill that gap. It delivers the powerful cleaning ability of methylene chloride without any of the extreme hazards, making it the first genuinely practical non-hazardous polyurethane flushing compound on the market. EN720 is solvent-free, non-flammable and safe to handle by operators without the extreme precautions required when working with DCM.

Supplied in 25L and 200L drums, EN720 is suitable for both workshop-scale and large industrial polyurethane processing operations.

How EN720 Works

EN720 is formulated to break down the curing process of polyurethane, preventing uncured PU from bonding to the walls of pipes, mixer heads and processing equipment. Unlike DCM — which relies on being pushed through equipment under air pressure to create friction and scrub residue — EN720 is a reactive cleaner that actively seeks out and dissolves uncured PU on contact.

EN720 is a very searching cleaner. What we mean by that is that it actively seeks out a substance to react with and dissolve. Unlike DCM, which relies on air pressure to push the cleaner and create scrubbing friction, EN720 needs a much slower flow, since it wants contact time with the material in order to react and dissolve. As a result, you can reduce air pressure during flushing, and you can even leave EN720 within the pipes and mixer heads to react.

Because EN720 is non-hazardous, it can also be safely collected and recycled after use — delivering 6–9 flushes per litre compared to single-use DCM, significantly improving cost-in-use.

How to Use EN720 Polyurethane Flushing Agent

Standard machine flushing

  1. Reduce air pressure below your normal DCM flushing pressure — EN720 does not rely on high-pressure friction to clean.
  2. Introduce EN720 into the system at a slow, controlled flow rate to maximise contact time with uncured PU residue.
  3. Allow EN720 to dwell within pipes and mixer heads as needed — the compound will continue to react and dissolve PU bonds during the dwell period.
  4. Flush through and collect the used EN720 for recycling. A single litre of EN720 can typically be reused for 6–9 flushes before disposal.

 

Tips for best results

  • Do not rush the flow rate — EN720 needs contact time to react, unlike DCM which relies on pressure and speed.
  • For stubborn residue, leave EN720 in the system for an extended dwell period before flushing through.
  • Collect used EN720 after each flush for recycling — do not discard after a single use.
  • Store in original drums with lids secured in a cool, dry location.

    Will EN720 damage seals?

    Viton seals will swell, but the issue is easily solved by replacing viton seals with either EPDM or PTFE encapsulated viton seals.

    What tubing is best?

    We recommend that any tubing is replaced with PTFE tubing as over time EN720 will soften and narrow softer tubing materials such as PVC, santoprene, etc

    How do you dispose off the material?

    EN720 should be disposed of by using a registered waste disposal company, but the reduced risk means the cost should be much cheaper than DCM/Methylene Chloride

    Will EN720 work on cured PU?

    No, you will need EN710 or EN705 for cured PU cleaning

    How to use

    1. Use neat Start with a flush time 50% of that used for Methylene Chloride
    2. Make initial flush of line, hold cleaner within line for several seconds and then quick flush
    3. Locate the EN720 container near to the head as only small amounts of EN720 are required
    4. Use eye protection and vinyl/nitrile rubber gloves when using EN720
